Ask yourself: what about the stars’ configuration when you were born could possibly affect your personality and/or physical characteristics?
If you imagine it is the effect of gravity on you, then the only heavenly body close enough to have a real effect on you is the moon (think: tides).
If you imagine it is electromagnetic energy, then the closest heavenly body is the sun. Strangely, however, people who believe in astrology don’t think that the sun or the moon are any powerful than Neptune.
And what about Pluto? It isn’t even considered a planet anymore, but rather a Kuiper belt object – basically, a comet that got trapped in orbit. If astrologers consider Pluto as a contributor to our traits, what about all the other comets? What about the asteroids in the asteroid belt, some of which (e.g., Ceres) are fairly large? What about the many moons of Saturn and Jupiter, some of which are larger even than Mercury or Pluto? And what about the planets that astronomers are discovering in other solar systems? If distance is not a consideratin (e.g., Pluto has as great an effect as the sun or moon), than why shouldn’t “Gliese 581C” be an important planet whose position at your birth effects your personality traits?
Finally, note that the constellations are not the same in the southern hemisphere and that the seasons are flipped (summer is winter and winter is summer). Doesn’t this mean that the astronomical signs should be reversed in the Southern Hemisphere? Certain astrologers acknowledge this difference and others don’t – but neither group interferes with one another. This is because it’s not proper psuedo-science etiquette to step on one another’s toes. In a true science, discrepancies in data and methodology result in lively debates that merit further investigation.
The short version of my answer is: there is little to no evidence that astrology has any effect whatsoever on anything. Feel free to disagree IF and ONLY IF you have contradictory empirical evidence. In research methods, we talk about the confirmation bias: that people don’t want to hear anything that contradicts their own pet worldview. As nice as it might be to have something that explains the world as prettily as astrology does, please consider the possibility that astrological forecasts are all just “for entertainment only,” as the newspapers that print them clearly state.
PS – why is this important to me? Because critical thinking is important in today’s society. We are constantly bombarded with people trying to convince us that they have quick answers to our problems. We need to know when we’re being snowed under by emotional appeals and scientific-sounding jargon so we can avoid being decieved or even hurt by quack practitioners. Think for yourself! Don’t even take MY word for it – read up on your own and come to your own conclusions!
